On a Friday night in a Nevada heat wave, she walks into the Kingsnakes' clubhouse with her savings in an envelope, and the president won't take it. Everett Boyd, called Judge, drinks coffee at a card table under a low lamp, and one word from him takes a stranger's hand off her back. He doesn't take payment in women, either. So Laurel names a bet. One hand of poker, heads up. If she wins, Tommy is clear. If she loses, she stays the night.
