On Halloween night the Five Houses come to Penwarne Hall for the Masque. At midnight every guest gives a name to the Herald, and she answers Welcome or Turned out. Kerensa Penwarne has been Herald four years and never said the second word.
The man who bought her family's mortgage arrives to collect it in person. Lucan Ashe is courteous, exact and very still, and when a guest's hand lands on her wrist, he ends it in five words. He asks for a life cast of his face: two hours of plaster under her hands, with nothing to do but trust her.
He is not who he says he is. He has come for a debt older than the mortgage, and the road to it runs through her Welcome. No guest leaves before the unmasking, and the more of his face she learns, the less she can pretend it is all she wants.
