The story
The story
Dr. Imani Brooks owes $211,000, so when a man with the coldest hands she's ever shaken offers $1.2 million for a year of night shifts, she signs. Then her bodyguard, Ansgar Holm, mentions that no human physician has lasted a year.
The job is with a vampire court beneath Manhattan, where wounds won't stay closed and nobody can say what's in the medicine.
Ansgar is the court's enforcer, three hundred years old and sparing with words. He sets a chair behind her knees before she knows she's falling. He puts his coat on her shoulders and calls it her health. He keeps four feet between them, because at four feet her pulse is a fact and not an invitation.
Her contract can't protect her from the queen. Neither can he. But he can promise to be the expense.
He has one rule: he never feeds from anyone who knows his name.
She has known his for three days. She wants him anyway, a little scandalized at herself and not sorry.
A steamy paranormal bodyguard romance.

Character
- Ansgar Holm
- The man who holds the household's security, assigned to keep Imani safe for the length of her contract. He watches everything on the block, has opinions about delivery vans and sightlines, and tells her plainly that no human physician has lasted a year in the household.
- Edric Kells
- The silver-templed man in a very good suit who offers Imani 1.2 million dollars on behalf of a private household. He would rather be accurate than liked, and his hand is the coldest she has shaken in her whole career.
- Imani Brooks
- An emergency physician nine years into night shifts, with two hundred and eleven thousand dollars in student loans and her mother's mortgage to carry. She reads every page before she signs, asks direct questions, and signs for one year and 1.2 million dollars.
Object
- The contract
- Twenty-two pages: one year of exclusive services, 1.2 million dollars paid monthly, housing provided, night hours and a nondisclosure clause. Clause fourteen, on scope of practice, reads 'treatment of conditions arising within the household', which covers everything and nothing.
Faction
- The household
- Kells's word for his employers: a very old Manhattan institution that keeps night hours, needs a physician for a year, and asks her to keep its confidence. The position is vacant. The household has found retention challenging.
Spoiler-safe. Only what you learn in chapter 1.
