The story
If you grew up between Erie and Pittsburgh, you've heard her: four minutes and eleven seconds of a seven-year-old whispering to a 911 dispatcher from her mother's closet, the call that put her father in prison for life.
The girl on the tape is Callie Dunmore. She is thirty-two now, a night dispatcher in the same county, answering other people's worst minutes in a steady voice and never once arguing with the verdict.
Then, at 3:12 on the anniversary, line three lights up and plays her own whisper back to her, with a line she has never heard. Two nights later it happens again.
Deputy Jack Garrity, Unit 14, is a voice on the radio she has never met. She knows his breathing, the half beat before his call sign, and the quarter hour he vanishes every night at three. Then he comes downstairs.
A slow-burn romantic thriller with steamy heat, a case everyone thinks they know, and a man who says he'll stay on the line.
